at 26 he was “a healthy man of the world, with his psychic part dormant since the age of ten. Just a ‘have-a-good-time sort of man.’ ” Afterwards he suffered ten years of severe ill- ness, but astonishingly the photograph taken twelve years later showed him as much younger and more refined. Mr. Turvey himself commented: “I maintain that something has not only made me live when medically I should have died five times, not only turned me from the world to heaven in desire, not only given me marvelous gifts, but has stamped youth where old age should have been clearly visible.” Ironically enough he died only three months after the photographs were published, on May 3, 1912.
Both Mr. Turvey and another famous projector, Sylvan J. Muldoon, found their powers of astral projection develop dur- ing periods of intense physical illness. It is also very curious that there should have been such a spontaneous renaissance of astral projection in the early years of the twentieth century. Some of Mr. Turvey’s experiences in Bournemouth took place about the same time as those of Sylvan J. Muldoon in America and Oliver Fox in London, although all three individuals were unknown to each other at the time.
The subject of astral projection (under one name or an- other) is actually of great antiquity, and was well known in ancient Egypt and India. One esoteric Hindu scripture, the Yoga-V asishtha-Maharamayana, has elaborate stories of astral projection which prefigure some of Mr. Turvey’s experiences and provide a better context for them than Western occultism. According to Hindu metaphysical teaching, individual exist- ence itself is a limited expression of the Cosmic Soul, The Absolute becomes personal, becomes Creator of a universe. Through the special creation of the fields of time, space, and causality, the one omnipotent God limits its omnipotence and
