single eye in the centre of his forehead! It would be more apt an illustration to suppose the discovery of a man who had developed a third eye at the back of his head. The occurrence of a third eye in a single individual would be held to suggest that there was a latent potentiality for the developing of a third eye in other men. Here is Mr. Turvey, who has either developed or inherited (or perhaps he has done both), a faculty of sight far more marvellous than that which would be acquired by the man with a third eye in the back of his head. The evidence of the accuracy of his statements is accessible to any serious student who, not deeming “The Voucher” sufficient cuarantee of the existence and genuineness of the letters, cares to write to Mr. Turvey for any particular “ letter.”
It may be said that the third-eye man would have his eye continually on show, and that this circumstance differentiates it from the faculties of Mr. Turvey, which are more or less fitful in their apparition. But a comet is not held to be less worthy of the scrutiny of the astronomer than the planet or the fixed star; rather other- wise, For that which exists, but whose existence is only manifested fitfully or oc- casionally, demands much more vigilance and
