It is not as if these eye-witnesses were called upon, after a long lapse of time, to revive memories of a distant past with the aid of leading ques- tions by a zealous counsel. Their letters were written at the time that the incidents occurred, and they are printed as they were written. The originals can be inspected by all who are concerned in the serious investigation of the subject, among whom, of course, I do not include the professional adzvocafus diabolt of the S.P.R., whose zeal in the discovery of fraud and falsehood has quite eaten him up.
I have been asked to write a preface to this collection of facts, and I do it with the greatest pleasure. I know the author well. He is a gentleman of good standing and of independ- ent means. Although he has long been an invalid, the clearness of his mind and the acuteness of his intellizence have never been impaired by the severity of the sufferings which have racked his physical frame. I do not think that he is capable of stating anything that is false, especially on a subject like this.
Mr. Turvey is in no sense of the word a professional medium. He has placed his time and his services at the disposal of investigators without fee or reward. He frankly confesses
