PREPACE.
It was the wish of the author that this book should have appeared two years ago, But the date of publication was from time to time post- poned by circumstances over which the author had no control. At last, however, the road seems clear, and I hope it may be found that the delay has been useful in securing the appearance of his book at the propitious moment.
Few little books have more profoundly affected the public mind of late than the volume entitled, “An Adventure,” published by Messrs, Macmillan. In this book two ladies, for whose good faith the publishers vouch, describe in plain lucid English, with much matter-of-fact detail, how two ladies, all unsuspecting of any of the mysteries of astral or other planes, having gone in the ordinary humdrum tourist fashion to “ Versailles,” sud- denly found themselves in the presence of Marie Antoinette and others, who with their
