Since many people begin to read a book at Chapter I., there may be some among my readers who have “skipped the Introduction.” It is therefore necessary that they should, for the better understanding of this chapter, be told that I use the pronoun “I” between inverted commas to denote that part of my consciousness which appears to leave the physical body, and to assume a distinct body of its own, which body is capable of functioning by means of five or more senses. I use the word “Me,” in capital letters and between inverted commas, to denote the body which is left at home, and is apparently quite normal but for the fact that it can receive messages from “I” by means of clairaudience.
The editor considers that a certain amount of explanation is required concerning the phases of phenomena which are mentioned in this chapter. As he is restricted by the amount of space at his disposal, the observa- tions which are expressed are written in a somewhat more precisely positive manner than would otherwise have been adopted.
In using the word “visible” the editor does not wish to be understood as meaning odjec- tively visible, for that would, of course, imply the presence of a ‘‘ materialized form”; and
